"Preference for a boy child, over a girl child" - In vogue in India today?

‘Look, a girl child, oh no! We are doomed’….this used to be the situation, in Indian scenario a few years back. But over the years, this trend has shown a slight change in the urban population with people having no hassles for a girl baby. The environment at my friends place, over a new born baby girl, irritated me so much, that it prompted me to write this.

All said and done, even today every couple would want to have a male child and the ratio of preference is comparatively very high for a male over a female. But why? Why is the preference for a boy over a girl, when the resources required to raise them is all same?
Say, the general belief is male counterparts would take care of parents during their old age..

But practically, how many sons are taking care of their parents? You might say, they will but then why is the concept of old age homes popular ?

Please note, I am not accusing anyone here. This is only an observation.

First - looking at my blog - do you think I can be serious - if I become then the doctors and hospitals will earn moeny ;)

Agree with you on this post - I am one of those who cannot take care of parents being away from home so long....but there is no correct answer - who can and who cant - its a personal situation

Old age homes are increasing, yes it is, but it is for parents to blame for, its the culture, values and ethos which they teach their kids tht influences the kids whether they love their parents or dump them in old age homes, and also history always repeats, PPl get same treatment wht they dished out to their elders.

@ceedy - may be!

@sunny - the question here is, "Why's a boy preferred over a girl?"
